Working Smarter: Success and a Shopify Online Store

When I began my online marketing business in 1998 there was nobody to help me but a host of scammers selling useless get-rich-quick schemes and a small handful of genuine Internet Marketers with an expensive range of e-books, software and courses.

Obviously it didn't take me long to work out who were the scammers and give them a wide berth. I then focused on Internet masters like the late Cory Rudl and his Internet Marketing Centre. His products included e-books and courses with a wealth of information and functional, useful software. Michael Campbell of Dynamic Media was another from whom I learnt a great deal ... and still do.

Clickbank was available for transaction processing and provided the excellent service it still provides today.

In those days it was a steep learning curve for me. I was fascinated by the thought of making money on autopilot. And, as I was studying a Master's Degree that included subjects in HTML coding, multimedia production etc, it became a major fascination.

Stories started to surface about those who had worked mundane jobs, began online businesses and within short periods were rolling in money. If they could do it, so could I. Although my endeavours never led to millions pouring into my accounts, I've consistently made a reasonable income.

Interestingly, there are still success stories appearing almost weekly.

Just yesterday I read about a woman who began selling feather hair pieces and within months was turning over $100,000 per month. It seems almost incomprehensible that anyone could make so much money selling something as uninteresting (to me) as feather hair pieces. How many people buy them? There's obviously enough to make a good living.

What further appealed to me was that the woman had used a new applications service provider called Shopify to set up and run her business. Although I like to think I'm informed about what is happening in Internet marketing, I had never heard of it. Once I visited the site, I wished that something so useful and time-saving had been around when I first started online.

If you are thinking about starting up your own online business to sell anything, providers like Shopify can make your life so much easier. Take a look at their site and let me and our fellow readers know what you think.

  1. When I emailed Lonesome George (, one of the firms using Shopify and asked the following two questions, here are the responses.

Me: What are some of the key advantages? Disadvantages?

Shopify is a great platform from a usability standpoint. I find that the interface is easy to understand and navigation is relatively intuitive. The manner in which the key elements of running an online store are organized makes sense, providing a comprehensive "command center" without being too intimidating to new small business owners. Despite certain things that still require technical savvy in web development, most of the daily management functions relating to product inventory, CRM, payment/fulfillment/shipping, content creation, promotions, etc. are all simple enough for any operator to work with. Shopify also integrates with a host of other plugins through their "app store" that helps to further extend our store's functionality.

Me: How successful has your venture been with Shopify?

Overall, we're quite pleased with our Shopify experience thus far. One of the notable highlights to point out is their tremendous customer service and support staff. As a small startup organization, we find ourselves tackling diverse and evolving challenges in the digital space often; we appreciate the insightful guidance and consistently solution-driven approach the Shopify team provides each and every time we have a question, no matter how big or small

Thanks to Lonesome George staff for taking the time to respond.
